The USA

America paints by the district: Wynwood, Bushwick, downtown Nashville.

The biggest cluster of street art tours on the site is American, and almost all of it is concentrated in a handful of painted blocks. Three ways in, what each costs to join, and which city it belongs to.

City by city

Six cities where the street art is the reason to walk.

Painted warehouses in Miami, Bordalo II animals on the Lisbon hills, gable ends in Belfast, the East End paste-ups, Berlin courtyards and trainsides, and the muralist tradition of Mexico City.

By kind of tour

Street art on foot, from a saddle, or with a can in your hand.

The same district reads differently at three miles an hour. Walking tours for the detail and the artists’ names, bike tours for the distance between painted neighbourhoods, workshops for the morning you stop photographing walls and start filling one.

Miami

Wynwood is a neighbourhood that agreed to be painted.

Dead warehouse blocks handed over to muralists, repainted around Art Basel every December, with a ticketed courtyard of commissioned pieces in the middle of it. Tours run on foot, by bike and by golf cart, and the good ones start before the Florida sun turns the lot into a griddle.

One museum ticket, one hillside barrio, one taxi tour and a run of city walks. These sit at the top across every city on the site, and each one earns the slot differently.

What it costs

What a street art tour costs, from a museum ticket to a private day.

Every tour on the site, grouped by price. Most city walks and collection tickets land under fifty dollars, and the paint is free either way.

Under $50

City walks, museum and Banksy-collection tickets, and the shorter graffiti tours.

$50 to $150

Half-day rides, golf-cart districts, black-taxi mural tours and most workshops.

$150 and up

Private guides, artist-led studio days, and the tours that put a whole car or cart at your disposal.

Only there

Three places where the paint is the whole story.

Murals turn up in every city now. A warehouse district repainted every December, a hillside that told its own history in spray paint, and a peace line you can still put your hand on do not.

Miami

The Wynwood Walls

A developer bought a block of dead warehouses in 2009 and offered the outsides to muralists. The Walls themselves are now a ticketed courtyard of commissioned work, refreshed around Art Basel each December, and the streets for blocks around carry the overflow for nothing. Golf carts cover the ground fast; on foot you get the doorways and the tags between the big pieces.

Medellin

Comuna 13

This hillside was the most feared address in the city inside living memory. Outdoor escalators now run up it, and the walls tell that story in paint made largely by people who were there, with hip hop crews and ice cream carts working the same steps. Guides come from the barrio, which is the entire reason to take one rather than walk it alone.

Belfast

The gable ends

Belfast puts its politics on the ends of terraces, and the peace line still stands between the Falls and the Shankill. Black-taxi drivers work both sides, stopping at murals they can date and explain, and the run usually finishes at a wall covered in visitors’ handwriting. None of it is decoration. Read it before you photograph it.

The walls change

The mural you saved a photograph of may already be painted over.

Street art is temporary on purpose. Pieces get buffed, tagged, or covered by whoever comes next, and a good guide rewalks the route every week. If you need a specific piece to still be there, book the ones that keep theirs: a collection indoors, a ticketed wall garden, or a workshop where the piece you photograph is the one you made.

Book ahead

Four street art bookings that will not wait.

Most of this can be arranged the night before over a beer. These four run on timed tickets, on one car per group, or on the number of spray cans in the room.

  1. 01Moco Museum Amsterdam Entrance Tickets with Banksy & MoreEntry is a timed slot and the collection is small, so the good hours go first.
  2. 02Brooklyn Graffiti Workshop with Local ArtistA workshop is limited by wall space and cans. Groups are small and they fill early.
  3. 03Wynwood Walls Skip-the-Line TicketThe Walls are a ticketed courtyard with their own opening hours, and every district tour is planned around them.
  4. 04Murals Taxi TourA black-taxi mural tour is one car for your group. The slot is either free or it is gone.
